Perla is a Toxicologist in the United States Toxicology team at Broughton Life Sciences with over five years of experience in the field of human health risk assessments. Perla’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez Campus and an ongoing master's in Toxicology and Pharmacology from Michigan State University.

Perla began her career as a quality control analyst for the biotechnology company Amgen in Puerto Rico, where she ensured that products complied with the standards required for patient use. She also supported the development of GMP-compliant electronic batch record systems for laboratory documentation and the implementation of new test methods. Later, Perla worked as a human health risk assessor in the toxicology department at Juul Labs, Inc. in San Francisco, California, to support the non-clinical studies for PMTA submissions and the development of new products.

At Broughton, Perla supports the development of non-clinical strategies for consumer and medicinal e-cigarette products in the United States and Europe, and has a high level of competence across the associated toxicological workstreams, providing robust evidence-based conclusions to support client decision-making. Perla has recently developed her expertise in the environmental assessments of tobacco products for regulatory submissions.

Perla has collaborated with clients and colleagues across the industry, authoring scientific conference posters by distilling complex scientific data into impactful key messages. Perla is a member of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry and the Society of Toxicology Conference. Recently, Perla also earned a PRINCE2 certification in project management.

Perla enjoys collaborating with manufacturers to develop their reduced-risk nicotine products and providing the non-clinical support required to improve accessibility, facilitating the transition of cigarette smokers to alternative, less harmful products.
